Beginners Guide To A Haircare Routine

9th November 2022
Putting a hair care routine together goes far beyond just how often you wash your hair! Everyone’s hair is different so what works for one person might not work for another and that’s okay.

Step 1: Determine What Your Hair Needs

Using products that are designed to target your hair needs will instantly make a difference to how easy your hair is to manage, as well as how it looks and feels.

(If you are unsure what your hair needs you can book a complimentary consultation in the salon.)

Step 2: Your Hair Wash

Once you know what your hair needs, and you’ve got the relevant products its time to start your hair care routine.

When you shampoo the structure of the hair opens, and this removes the dirt from the outer layer of your hair called the cuticle. Depending on how often you wash your hair will determine if you need to do one or two shampoos.

Now that the structure of the hair is open, you need to close the cuticles back down to protect your hair against damage and breakage. The best way to do this is by combing through your conditioner with a brush that is suitable for wet hair. Not only does this ensure all the hair is covered but it also creates a smooth surface to give your hair more shine.

(We can advise you if a cream conditioner or a leave in conditioner spray is most suited to you)

Step 3: Styling

Styling products are there to help you manage your hair so you can get the most out of it. There are so many products available both professionally and in the supermarket that it can become very confusing.

Here are a few products that are key in everyone’s hair care routine.

Heat protector

If you are a sucker for a hot tool then heat protector is a big must as this will stop your hair drying out and prevent potential damage.

Oils

A good oil is great for preventing split ends, controlling fluffy hair, and softening course textured hair.

People tend to panic when they hear the word oil as they instantly think greasy hair, using a small amount of a good oil won’t give you this problem. Less is more!

(Top tip: Oil can be used on dry hair for that extra bit of finish and softness!)

A wet brush

Wet brushes are a great all-rounder! They are brilliant for detangling, combing through your conditioner and even for drying the hair.

If you are unsure which hair products would suit your hair please don’t hesitate to come in for a complimentary consultation with one of our stylists for your personal recommendation.
