As part of this, we are no longer able to offer the traditional ‘blob of tint behind the ear’ test 48 hours before your appointment. Recent changes in skin testing policies and insurance mean we now exclusively use the Colourstart system—a more efficient and reliable way to assess any potential allergies to the hair colour ingredient PPD.
What is Colourstart? Colourstart is an FDA-approved, plaster-like skin test that you apply five days before your colour service. It’s designed to detect any allergic reactions to PPD, the primary ingredient in most hair dyes. What’s more, this test could potentially cover you for life*, saving you the need for repeat testing before every appointment!
You can purchase a Colourstart kit at our salon for £15 (our cost price) or online via the Colourstart website. Once you’ve completed the initial test, you simply update your Colourstart Passport online before each appointment. If your health status remains unchanged, you'll get the green light to go ahead without further skin testing.
A Passport for Life! The Colourstart Passport is valid not just at Mosaic but also at any other Colourstart-supported salon, making it a convenient, one-time test that you can use anywhere.

If you currently have a skin test booked , we will discuss these changes with you and help transfer you over to colourstart when you come in.
We appreciate your understanding and look forward to continuing to create amazing colour experiences with you.
